A Fateful Encounter

It began on a quiet stretch of Florida coastline at golden hour. Caroline had wandered down to watch the tide come in; Joamni was the stranger who jogged back twenty yards to return the paperback she hadn't noticed slip out of her tote into the sand. Neither of them planned to talk for more than a minute — but the sun took its time setting, and they ended up walking the shoreline until the lifeguards started waving everybody in.

By the time they exchanged numbers the sky was already that bruised purple it gets just after sunset, and neither of them could remember the title of the book that had started it. Years later they'd return to that same stretch of beach at the same hour, but back then it was just two strangers, a borrowed paperback, and the kind of conversation that quietly rewrites a life.
